The Maya's home from home
A small cultural centre dedicated to the Maya of Guatemala
Location: 94 Wandsworth Bridge Road, SW6 2TF
Description: Guatemala has the largest Maya population of any country, and in terms of numbers, they are the dominant ethnic group.
And so to Wandsworth, South London and the 'Guatemalan Maya Centre', a small cultural and educational centre dedicated to the Maya of Guatemala. With Guatemala probably the best restored example of classical Mayan style, the centre runs a varied programme of topical films and lectures and even more specialised facilities for students and academics.
Indeed, the textile collection (showing the development of Guatemalan Maya costume from the turn of the century to the present day) is one of the largest of its kind with over 7000 textiles.
The Centre was founded in 1990 by Krystyna Deuss, author of 'Indian Costumes from Guatemala', who spends 5 months each year in Guatemala continuing her research into the customs of the Highland Maya.
Why not take a visit to 'little' Guatemala in London.
