Oliver Cromwell's resting place
Oliver Cromwell's bosy was stored here in 1660
Location: 72 High Holborn, Holborn, WC1V 6LS
Description: Well a temporary one!
It was at this very pub - 'The Old Red Lion' - that Oliver Cromwell, his son-in-law Henry Ireton and John Bradshaw, the president of the commission which tried Charles I, were taken after they had been exhumed following the restoration in 1660.
After lying in the pub overnight, they were taken to Tyburn, hanged in public, and then decapitated, the heads to be stuck on poles outside Westminster Hall.
Although it is stated that their bodies had been embalmed - Bradshaw's was in fact in a severe state of decay...pity the poor bloke who had to carry him!
Oliver Cromwell (born April 25, 1599 Old Style, died September 3, 1658 Old Style) was an English military and political leader best known for his involvement in making England into a republican Commonwealth and for his later role as Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland.
