The Wenlock Arms

The Wenlock Arms

David Beckham and Al Murray frequented boozer.

Location: 26, Wenlock Road, Hoxton, N1 7TA

Description: This East End boozer was closed in early 2012 and looked set for demolition and replacement by flats before being saved after a campaign by locals.

It was built in 1835 and opened as a pub in January the following year. It survived the wartime bombing of the district but still retains much of its original characteristics.

The pub features in the opening credits of Al Murray's Compete For The Meat TV chat show.

England football legend David Beckham was a regular as a boy when visiting his grandad Joe who lived around the corner. Joe was said to be Beckham's footballing inspiration. Locals recall Becks popping back in when he was older and buying drinkers a round when he was a world famous Man Utd player.
