Grant Museum of Zoology
Go and see the Dodo in London!
Location: Rockefeller Building, 21 University Street, Bloo, WC1E 6DE
Description: This is the only remaining university zoological museum in London, with over 67,000 specimens. It was founded in 1828 as a teaching collection; skeletons, mounted heads, specimens preserved in fluid, etc.
There are some spectacular glass models made by the Blaschka family in the late 1800s, and many of Darwin mentor Robert Grant's original specimens. Indeed Darwin's Bulldog Thomas Henry Huxley is also represented in the collection.
For the modern artist in you Sir Victor Negus's bisected heads are both arresting and beautiful. We wonder if Damien Hirst was inspired here.
The highlights include the Tasmanian Tiger or Thylacine, the Quagga, and the Dodo.
