Description: Joseph Carey Merrick was born in Leicester in 1862 and before he was two he had began to develop tumors on his face.
Most of his life he unemployable, destitute, and stripped of all his self-worth by the ignorance of the people of the day.
Joseph Merrick suffered from a rare disease which was not actually the elephantiasis that provided his unfortunate nickname. But The Proteus Syndrome Man or even worse, The Neurofibromatosis Man, wouldn't be a very good movie title, so the misdiagnosis probably worked out for the best.
He earned some money as part of a show but his real value was to the medical profession, and it was here that they offered him a permanent home on the ground floor of the East wing.
Joseph died on April 11th, 1890.
