The Hen and Chickens

The period shop where once a famous arrest was made.
Location: 54 Borough High Street, Southwark
Description: This grand Grade II listed building in Southwark has been occupied by Field & Sons building and surveyors for more than 135 years but is certainly older than its long-time residents.
It was formerly a Victorian inn called The Hen and Chickens, and was the notorious site of a famous arrest. In 1875 Henry Wainwright was apprehended here as he arrived in the building (rented by his brother), attempting to hide the decomposing remains of his former mistress. He offered a bribe of 100 to the two policemen each to let him go but was charged with the murder of his mistress Harriet Lane. Henry Wainwright was hung at Newgate while his brother Thomas seven years in prison.
