Peace Symbol
The birth of the globally recognised peace symbol.

Description: This is one of the highest London plaques - dating back to 1958 and honouring the moment that Gerald Holtom presented his design to fellow peace activists for the worldwide peace symbol. This used to be the offices of Peace News magazine. (You may notice a replica plaque lower down if it still remains).
Earlier in the year he was invited to design artwork for use on the first Aldermaston March organised by the Direct Action Committee against Nuclear War (DAC). He actually designed the composite of semaphore for the letters N and D (Nuclear Disarmament) at his Twickenham home and presented it for the first time here on the 21st February 1958.
The DAC were wound up in 1961 and CND took over, with both of adopting the logo, and becoming the globally recognised symbol of peace and nuclear disarmament.
