Description: Here is the oldest surviving official London plaque to a woman - authoress Fanny Burney (1752-1840). She became known as Madame DArblay following her marriage.

Her witty novels were published to widespread acclaim in the late 18th century including Evelina, Cecilia, and Camilla.

She also published to great acclaim her diaries, which record her life within the distinguished literary circles of Samuel Johnson and the bluestocking group. The influence Burney exerted over Austen and other peers led her to be described by Virginia Woolf as the mother of English fiction.

She moved in here in 1818 in order to provide a London home for her son Alexander, describing it in her journal as my new and probably last dwelling. She left in 1828 proving that wrong!
